Real estate sales steady, board expects ‘measured growth’

There has been no significant increase but no back slide either, as home sales in Medicine Hat have held steady throughout the first month of 2013.

The sales ledgers show a total of $20,131,302 in January. That number is down $1,621,048 from the same 31-day period in 2012.

Fifty-nine fewer residential properties were put on the market in January, however sales almost made up for that. A total of 88 homes were sold, as compared to the 89 sold in January of 2012.]

Realtors predict solid year for 2013

With sales of single-family homes jumping by 34 per cent in Sylvan Lake but dropping by 17 per cent in Stettler last year, it’s tough to generalize about the health of Central Alberta’s real estate market. But Ken Devoe, president of the Central Alberta Realtors Association, offered an optimistic diagnosis on Thursday.

“The 2012 real estate market was one of good growth,” he said at a Red Deer news conference organized by the association.

Real GDP grows in Canada

CALGARY — Real gross domestic product in Canada grew 0.3 per cent in November, following a 0.1 per cent rise in October, according to Statistics Canada.

The federal agency reported Thursday that most major industrial sectors increased production in November. Goods production increased 0.6 per cent while the output of service industries rose 0.1 per cent.

Lamphier: Strength of China’s economy inspires divergence of opinion

More than a decade after China’s explosive growth began to trigger news headlines in the West, there remain two distinct schools of thought.

In one camp are those who say China’s continued ascent — and its eventual crowning as the world’s largest economy — is inevitable.

IMF sees hope for Canadian, global economies despite a challenging year ahead

OTTAWA — The Canadian and global economies will continue struggling to maintain momentum this year, but in a relatively hopeful new outlook, the International Monetary Fund says it sees light at the end of the tunnel.

The IMF now expects Canada’s economy will expand by a modest 1.8 per cent this year — two-tenths of a point weaker than it forecast three months ago — and by 2.3 per cent in 2014, off one-tenth of a point.

MLS sales growth outside Calgary outpaces city in 2012

CALGARY — Home sales growth in the surrounding towns and cities far outpaced the growth in the city of Calgary in 2012, ending the year up 21 per cent, according to the Calgary Real Estate Board.

Overall in Calgary, MLS sales grew by 14.66 per cent in 2012 compared with the previous year.

Think Local Market looks to grow

The brains behind Think Local Market, Melanie Bekevich-Joos, attended the County of Grande Prairie council meeting Monday to discuss how her local-minded business could boost sales for local entrepreneurs.

ThinkLocalMarket.com is a municipality-funded website that provides an online vendor for local producers in 14 communities throughout the region.

Municipalities, such as the County and City of Grande Prairie, need to purchase annual memberships so that their ratepayers can take advantage of the service.

Variety of projects planned in town’s 2013 budget

Highlights of the Town of Sylvan Lake’s budget, which was passed unanimously by councillors Monday night, include:

• a municipal census is planned for 2013 at a cost of $27,000.

• a new parade float is budgeted at $30,000.

• detailed design of a new fire hall will be completed early in 2013 with construction planned to begin in the fall. The budgeted cost of construction is $3.8 million.
