Lakes park funded…maybe

Morinville town council will provide at least $107,000 at the Lakes district to build a playground, but an expert says that might not be enough to make the park happen.

Council voted 4-2 last week in favour of spending $107,205 plus any money left over from its parks planning contract with Environmental Design Solutions (EDI) to fund phase one of park development in the Lakes district. Phase one includes trails and a playground.

Studies find little long-distance impact from oilsands mines in northern Alberta

EDMONTON- A pair of recently published studies question the long-distance environmental impact of the oilsands.

The two studies from the University of Waterloo couldn’t find any increase over time of toxic hydrocarbons or heavy metals in sediments from lakes and rivers on the Athabasca Delta north of the oilsands mines.

Artificial lakes the latest proposal to reclaim spent oilsands mines

EDMONTON – Up to 30 large, artificial lakes could be built in the oilsands area if the province approves the idea as a new way to reclaim thousands of hectares boreal forest dug up for the massive open-pit mines.

While the goal is to create lakes clean enough for fish and recreation, it is also possible — give the unproven technology — that some of permanent pools could be left polluted with toxic tailings and solid waste from old mines for decades.
