Strathearn couple fights Southeast to West LRT line in Edmonton

The city is preparing to take over some land in Strathearn for the Southeast to West LRT line but one couple is begging them to reconsider.

City OK’s study of S.E. LRT financing options

Council approved Ald. Shane Keating’s proposal for a “workshop” to consider a special finance scheme to build a southeast LRT line, but the debate around his long-shot idea helped harden divisions about how council takes its next steps on expanding the transit system.

Keating’s pitch came about an hour after council gave final OK to RouteAhead, a 30-year transit plan that puts the southeast line and a connected extension up Centre Street or Edmonton Trail on roughly equal footing on the priority list.

Novel funding plan could kick-start southeast LRT

Told repeatedly that there’s no way to afford the southeast LRT for perhaps decades, Ald. Shane Keating will bring another fundraising idea to council Monday.

He’ll ask colleagues to explore whether the same complicated funding scheme that finally got the East Village redeveloped can also deliver his southeast ward’s long-awaited dream project.

Edmonton to update traffic noise policies

EDMONTON – With dozens of new LRT stations planned to be built in the coming years — bringing with them clanging bells and chiming doors — the city is updating its urban traffic noise policy.

The last policy was written in 2004. Since then, neighbourhoods close to LRT stations such as Southgate have highlighted the need to mitigate how noise from stations affects surrounding communities.

Public voices LRT concerns

Concerns about the cost of building an LRT line through St. Albert, as well as the city’s population, growth, density and even the Mafia, reared their heads at an open house devoted to the subject Saturday.

More than 100 people convened at St. Albert Catholic High School to listen to what city councillors, Edmonton Coun. Don Iveson and a few City of Edmonton employees had to say about the proposal.

Council agrees to borrow $50 million to finish Edmonton LRT line

The city will spend up to $65 million on a southeast LRT bridge and borrow another borrow another $50 million for the work on the rest of the LRT line, council voted Wednesday.

City councillors went back and forth on both a bridge design and the viability of borrowing money from a third party to fund utility relocations and demolitions for the planned southeast to west LRT route.
