Unprecedented demand fuels Calgary retail development boom

CALGARY— The demand from retailers for new retail projects in Calgary has reached a new and unprecedented level, says a new report by Colliers International.

The commercial real estate firm said developers are responding to the strong retailer interest as 42 projects comprising nearly 10.9 million square feet are in the planning, permitting or construction stage.

Retail complex breaks ground in morley

The Morley townsite, west of Cochrane, has remained exactly the same for years.

But all that is about to change.

On Oct. 19 the Bearspaw band, one of three that comprise the Stoney Nakoda Nation, celebrated the fact they’re about to build a new retail complex next to the youth centre, opposite the Stoney band office.

Walmart takes Round 1 as Zellers era ends, Edmonton retail rumble begins

EDMONTON  – The opening of Edmonton’s newest Walmart (NYSE:WMT) on Friday simultaneously marked the end of the Zellers era and the first salvo in a retail war with rival Target.

“Let the games begin,” said Paul McElhone, executive director of the University of Alberta School of Retailing.

Emerald Hills Centre in Sherwood Park takes walkable approach to big-box shopping

SHERWOOD PARK — The developer behind Emerald Hills Centre hopes the big, new retail project keeps Strathcona County shoppers closer to home.

The first phase of the 600,000-square-foot retail development in north Sherwood Park is set for its grand opening on Saturday after more than a year of construction.
