Alberta sees 4.4% hike in retail sales

CALGARY — Alberta recorded the second best year-over-year growth rate in retail sales in November, according to Statistics Canada.

Sales reached $5.9 billion during the month, up 4.4 per cent from November 2011, said the federal agency on Tuesday. Newfoundland and Labrador led the country with an annual growth rate of 5.2 per cent.

Canada gains a new leading economic indicator

OTTAWA— The Macdonald-Laurier Institute on Thursday launched a new leading economic indicator, filling a gap left by the cancellation of Statistics Canada’s monthly index.

The MLI’s indicator “will provide policymakers, business people, investors and ordinary Canadians as much as six months’ advance warning of significant changes in Canada’s economic performance and will do so with a high degree of reliability and accuracy,” said Philip Cross, MLI’s research coordinator.
