WH Border plans hit traffic snag

The two-step forward, one-step back push for a 24-hour crossing at Wild Horse appears on the backward step with Medicine Hat’s MP citing last week a dip in border crossings in 2012 as an indication that more has to be done.

County grants Clairmont Heights area structure plan final approval

The future of Clairmont has a definitive focus with the passing of third reading of the County of Grande Prairie’s Clairmont Heights area structure plan.

The 50-year plan will align the predicted growth of Clairmont with the amenities needed to sustain that growth when the population reaches an estimated 15,000.

Planned bike lane on new one-way street divides residents downtown

Work is beginning downtown this spring on a two-way bicycling track separated from traffic by a physical barrier.

But the plans to turn 7th Street S.W. into a one-way street to make way for it are still dividing the public.

The two-way cycle track on 7th Street S.W. — between 8th Avenue and the Bow River pathway — is expected to be ready by July.

Calgary home sets MLS record sale at $10.35 million

CALGARY — An opulent home described as a ‘French castle’ has set a record for the highest ever MLS sale price in Calgary as the property in Aspen Woods sold for $10.35 million on Wednesday.

The two-storey home, listed by realtor Corinne Poffenroth of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, was built in 2010 and had a list price of $11.495 million.

Staples: A new suburb on Edmonton’s northeast farmland makes sense

EDMONTON – City council made the right call to move ahead with the plan for a massive new residential neighbourhood in the city’s far northeast corner, the Horse Hills region along the North Saskatchewan River.

I say this even as I favour a denser, less sprawling city. There’s also no doubt that Horse Hills farmers spoke out eloquently at the city’s two-day public hearing on the area structure plan about the need to preserve farm land, none more so than farmer Andrew Voogd.

City sewage system can’t keep up with biosolids surge from population boom

CALGARY — The city’s booming population growth is filling more than the suburbs: Calgary’s sewage lagoons are also close to overflowing.

The city pumps its biosolids from wastewater treatment facilities into the southeast Shepard sludge lagoons. Even through the city has a sophisticated system for turning sludge into fertilizer for farmer’s fields, the treatment program cannot keep up with the increasing volume of biosolids, the utilities committee heard Wednesday.

Alberta small business confidence leads country

CALGARY — Small business confidence in Alberta remained strong in February as owners in the province had the most positive outlook in the country, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

In its latest Business Barometer survey, released Thursday, the CFIB said Alberta entrepreneurs are the most confident in Canada about the economy and their future success.
