Why more oil sands companies are choosing to develop air transportation services to access their remote operations

The company operating a tiny, privately owned airstrip northwest of Conklin, Alberta, is gearing up to service Boeing 737 jet airliners. Statoil Canada, which owns and operates the Leismer Aerodrome, handled 38,000 passengers last year and averages 334 landings and takeoffs per month at the airstrip. And while Conklin has a population of only 337 people, there are three other competing airstrips in the immediate area. Tom Arisman, operations manager at Statoil, says the company’s goal is to build the Leismer Aerodrome into the airport of choice in Conklin.

WestJet profit soars as it flies fuller planes

WestJet Airlines Ltd,Canada’s second-biggest airline, reported an 80 percent rise in third-quarter profit as it flew more passengers.

WestJet, which is preparing to launch a regional carrier in the second half of 2013, said net profit rose to C$70.6 million, or 52 Canadian cents per share, from C$39.3 million, or 28 Canadian cents per share, a year earlier.

WestJet picks Calgary as home base for new airline

CALGARY- After considering a number of cities across Canada, WestJet has decided to locate the headquarters of its new regional airline in Calgary.

Wednesday’s announcement means that Encore, the newly named regional airline expected to begin flying in the last half of 2013, will be based in the same city as its parent company. WestJet spokesperson Jennifer Sanford said airports in both Eastern and Western Canada were considered, but in the end, the company chose to remain true to its roots.

Air Canada boosting capacity to routes out of Calgary, other western cities

MONTREAL – Air Canada says it’s boosting capacity on routes in Western Canada this fall and winter to meet increased seasonal demand from Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and other cities in the region.
Much of the increased capacity will be in cities at the heart of Canada’s energy sector, including Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray, the focus of Alberta’s oilsands activity.

WestJet names its new regional airline ‘Encore’

Calgary- WestJet’s new regional airline, which will compete with Air Canada in some of Canada’s smaller markets, now has a name.

Following a vote by WestJet employees Thursday, the Calgary-based company announced its new airline — which is expected to begin flying in the last half of 2013 — will be called WestJet Encore.
