Annexation talks require mediator

With issues keeping the County and the City of Grande Prairie from coming to an agreement about the city’s annexation application, they agreed on one thing: They’re going to need a third-party mediator to come to a resolution.

During the most recent session between the two municipal governments, they decided to bring in mediation after the county dismissed the city’s proposal with respect to compensation for loss of property tax revenue and infrastructure that county recently invested in currently on the proposed annexed land.

Leduc County views Beaumont’s annexation plans as ‘hostile land grab’

EDMONTON – Beaumont’s surprise proposal to annex 24 quarter-sections of land feels like a hostile land grab, says Leduc County’s mayor.

Mayor John Whaley said Monday he is concerned that he only learned of Beaumont’s ambitions at a breakfast meeting last Wednesday — the morning after Beaumont town council passed a resolution to begin negotiations with Leduc County about the annexation.

Fast-growing Beaumont seeks to more than double its land area

A proposed land annexation that would more than double the size of the town of Beaumont is necessary to keep up with projected growth, town council says.

Council passed a resolution on Tuesday to begin negotiations with Leduc County to annex 24 quarter sections, or 1,536 hectares, of land. The land to be annexed extends north, west and south of Beaumont’s current boundaries.

Land supply for new homes tightening

Land for development could join water on the Town’s list of critical needs if annexation talks drag on.

After many years of busy construction, the Drake Landing, Cimarron, Air Ranch,Sheep River,Westmount and Westridge communities are entering their final phases. The only new development expected in the next few years will be in the new Mountain View subdivision and around the south end of the Okotoks airport.

Annexation talks stalled for month of November

Annexation negotiation teams from the City and County of Grande Prairie have met again Friday and the governing municipalities discussed transportation issues and declared to not meet in November.

City and county have been sitting at the negotiation table twice a month since August pounding out details of the city’s proposed annexation.

Developer says Okotoks ‘too late’ to annex project

The developer of an 88-home development on Okotoks’ eastern boundary would rather proceed with the project in the MD of Foothills, than seek annexation to the town.

MD council unanimously approved rezoning of the second and third phases of the Green Haven development to hamlet residential from agriculture and country residential last week, but they also attached a long list of conditions to the project.

MD will oppose annexation on south side of Okotoks

Okotoks town council’s historic vote to abandon the population cap and move forward with a proposal to annex enough land for 30 years of growth was just the first step on what could be a contentious debate with its neighbouring municipality.

MD of Foothills Reeve Larry Spilak said he’s pleased Okotoks council made a decision on the town’s future, but said some areas would be considered off limits for annexation.

He said the MD would oppose attempts to annex land south of Highway 7, which includes the site of the controversial Wind Walk development.

Town looking for parking options downtown

While hoping to avoid cutting into George Lane Park, High River Town Council voted to survey the downtown core in search of additional parking space to accommodate the growing tide of visitors to the Memorial Centre.

Coun. Al Brander shepherded the motion through Council at the September 24 meeting, carefully wording his proposal to evade the same level of opposition that greeted a previous survey suggesting the Town annex portions of a ditch in the popular downtown park to create more parking spots.
