City of GP to apply for annexation

The City of Grande Prairie will be submitting its annexation application to the Municipal Government Board by the end of June, despite the fact there are still outstanding issues with County of Grande Prairie.

City and county agreed to do mediated meetings earlier this year after stalling out with regular negotiation talks regarding the 6,300-hectare annexation. The municipalities met six times between January to March.

Leduc County wants Edmonton to end its ‘heavy handed’ annexation bid

EDMONTON – Leduc County, worried about losing millions in future tax revenue, wants Edmonton to abandon its “confrontational” annexation bid and return to negotiations.

Mayor John Whaley said Thursday the county was “surprised” at the size of Edmonton’s bid — 15,600 hectares from the city’s southern boundary to the international airport west of Highway 2. “We don’t think they need that much land.”

Annexation talk dominates planning session

Government and business leaders had a clear message for Sturgeon County this week about its fringe areas with St. Albert: either manage them together or let St. Albert take them over.

County council held a six-hour public hearing on the new municipal development plan (MDP) Tuesday. Proposed revisions to the plan, which was last overhauled in 1996, divide the county into 10 “neighbourhoods” or zones based on social, cultural, geographic and economic features, and sets development goals for each.

Edmonton’s plans to annex land ‘threatens the economy,’ warns Leduc County mayor

The City of Edmonton stunted Leduc County’s growth by planning to annex county land without negotiations, wrote the county’s mayor Tuesday.

In a letter sent to Leduc County residents, Mayor John Whaley said Edmonton’s plan to annex 38,000 acres of county land including the International Airport “threatens the economy.”
