Peace Wapiti division completes electoral ward review

After a lengthy review process, Peace Wapiti School Division has finalized changes to the electoral wards in the school division.

The changes, which mostly affect Ward 7, help to reflect a shift in population that has occurred since Peace Wapiti School Division was created as an amalgamation of regional school boards.

The Ward 7 changes essentially split up a large portion of the City of Grande Prairie’s population, which helps elected trustees represent the constituents on a more even basis, balancing population density with physical land area.

Elementary school boundaries changing in ’14

Red Deer Public Schools has accepted recommendations for changing school boundaries in 2014.

The board accepted suggestions from the Accommodations Committee for changing the boundaries since a new school is opening in Timberlands in the fall of 2014.

This school would become a dual track program. The English program would serve families from the communities of Clearview Extension, Clearview Ridge, College Park, Garden Heights, Timberlands and Timberstone, as well as Vanier Woods and Vanier East.

Boundary exemption changing

Starting in the spring, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is beginning a new boundary exemption process for the 2013-2014 school year.

“The process is different this year and the boundary exemption form will be made available on our website on Feb. 15, which is the first day that parents and students can submit them,” EIPS superintendent Bruce Beliveau said. “There is basically a month opening where they have to provide us with their intent. In other words, they need to plan out, they need to be very purposeful and intentional in their decision to go to a non-designated school.

Timberlands school boundaries approved

Red Deer Public School District trustees have approved the zoning boundaries for the new elementary school in Timberlands.

The dual track English and French immersion school is scheduled to open in September 2014.

The English program is zoned for students from Clearview Extension, Clearview Ridge, College Park, Garden Heights, Timberlands, Timberstone, Vanier Woods and Vanier East. Students in French immersion who live east of 30th Avenue will also attend the new school.

Fast-growing Beaumont seeks to more than double its land area

A proposed land annexation that would more than double the size of the town of Beaumont is necessary to keep up with projected growth, town council says.

Council passed a resolution on Tuesday to begin negotiations with Leduc County to annex 24 quarter sections, or 1,536 hectares, of land. The land to be annexed extends north, west and south of Beaumont’s current boundaries.

PWSD considering its electoral boundary options

After weeks of open houses, school councils and surveys, the Peace Wapiti School Division has whittled its electoral boundary options to two.

In both options, all nine trustee chairs will remain filled.

Option one is for the boundaries to remain the same, while the second option will see some re-arrangement in the southern wards of the school division.
