Alberta economic snapshot for March 9, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Mar. 9, 2013/ Troy Media/ – While economic growth has slowed a bit in Alberta, it doesn’t seem to be making a big impact within the labour market just yet. In February, the province added another 4,200 jobs, following a gain of 9,700 in January. Full-time positions (+11,700) were only partially offset by a drop in part-time positions (-7,500) last month.

CALGARY, AB, Mar. 2, 2013/ Troy Media/ – While overall economic activity appears to be moderating in Alberta’s economy, new information on investment activity suggests the slowdown may be very slight. In fact, the provincial economy will still advance in 2013, but just at a slower pace.

Once a year, Statistics Canada prepares a comprehensive survey of private and public sector investment intentions, including spending on construction and purchases of machinery and equipment (including repairs). This survey was conducted between October 2012 and late January 2013.

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 23, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Maybe it was the hockey lockout, or maybe just the cold weather. Whatever the reason, Albertans seemed to be in little mood in December for one of their favourite pastimes: shopping.

According to Statistics Canada, total retail sales in the province slumped to $5.712 billion in the last month of 2012, a 2.5 per cent dip from November and the second consecutive decrease. Compared to December of the previous year, total sales are higher by 1.9 per cent. The figures are adjusted for seasonal variation, so any of the effects of Christmas shopping are accounted for.

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 16, 2013/ Troy Media/ – The value of Alberta’s manufacturing shipments slid in December to $5.77 billion – a decrease of 4.5 per cent from the previous month (seasonally adjusted). After having levelled off in early 2012, manufacturing in the province eased lower in the final three months of the year.

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 9, 2013/ Troy Media/ – The monthly Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada is a closely watched gauge of how well the economy is performing, and yesterday’s report did not disappoint in Alberta.

After a one-month pullback in December, the provincial job market rebounded with a gain of 9,700 new positions in January (seasonally adjusted). Even better, almost all of these (8,600) were in full-time positions. Because more people entered the workforce – many of them new arrivals from other provinces – the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.5 per cent.

Edmonton’s employment dropped in December

EDMONTON, AB, Jan. 5, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Employment in the Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) edged down in December 2012 as job losses in the goods producing sector outweighed gains in services related sectors. Industries related to construction, manufacturing and energy showed lower employment in December, while employment in financial services and retail trade industries were up.

CALGARY, AB, Dec. 22, 2012/ Troy Media/ – One of the reasons Alberta is experiencing strong interprovincial in-migration is the hot job market and the fat paycheques that go with it. However, there is a big gap between the top and the bottom wage earners in the province – and the gap is growing.

CALGARY, AB, Dec. 8, 2012/ Troy Media/ – After a few months of subdued growth, Alberta’s labour market kicked back into high gear in November. Total employment advanced by 10,100 – a gain of 0.5 per cent over the previous month. However, virtually all of these jobs were part-time positions. The provincial unemployment rate now stands at 4.2 per cent.
