Kensington brick school house saved from wrecker’s ball

A brick schoolhouse that’s been a landmark in Kensington for nearly a century will remain in the hands of Calgary’s Catholic school board, a move that will preserve the building and forestall rumours it will be torn down.

St. John school was shuttered last June when district trustees voted in favour of moving the school’s fine arts program out of the building and to St. Dominic, a school in Dalhousie.

Diggers, Oil Sands Hotel to be demolished

A longstanding Fort McMurray landmark is due to come crashing down Saturday.

The property that housed Fort McMurray late night haunts Diggers Variety Club, Teasers Strip Bar and the Oil Can Tavern, in addition to the Oil Sands Hotel, closed its doors July 21. It was purchased Aug. 3 by the municipality and will be demolished Saturday at 8 a.m. The full demolition is expected to take approximately three to four days.

Cochrane town council briefs

Demolition OKed

Cochrane town council gave the OK to pay no more than $80,000 to demolish the old Shell Station on Hwy. 1A and prepare the site for future sale.

Some councilors were surprised at the potential price tag for demolition of the building, but Suzanne Gaida, senior manager of community services, explained the age of the building and materials used in its construction makes it necessary for precautions to be taken.

The cost of the demolition will be recouped from proceeds of the lots sale.
