City set for major economic growth

St. Albert is on the verge of an unprecedented growth spurt that will include the opening in December of a major new discount retail outlet at the city’s north end, a business meeting heard Tuesday.

“We are embarking on the single largest industrial development in the history of St. Albert,” Guy Boston, executive director of economic development told the city’s annual economic development breakfast.

Boston did not reveal the name of the retail outlet, but hinted at its size by saying it will be a store where shoppers can purchase “ketchup by the case.”

Calgary and area average house prices jump 108% over 10 years

CALGARY — Calgary’s residential housing market is poised for expansion in 2013, with move-up buyers set to lead the charge, says a report released Thursday by RE/MAX.

The report said the 10-year appreciation in average house prices for residential properties in the city and area was 108 per cent going from $198,350 in 2002 to $412,315 last year.

Edmonton’s economy to grow at slower pace

EDMONTON – The pace of Edmonton’s growing economy is still solid but slowing down, according to a new report by the Conference Board of Canada.

Real GDP for Edmonton in 2013 is expected to grow by 3.2 per cent, said the economic think tank’s Metropolitan Outlook 2013 released Wednesday. That’s down from 6.6 per cent in 2011 and 4.4 per cent in 2012.

City studies future of 10.7-million square feet of retail development

Shoppers, on your marks: Calgary is set to gain an estimated 10.7-million square feet of retail development over the next couple of years.

But what that’s going to look like is up in the air.

With half of Calgary’s existing retail in large format, there are concerns for just how many big-box stores the city can sustain.

RAISING A VILLAGE

East Village is on its way to becoming one of Calgary’s most sought after neighbourhoods.

“Starting this year it’s fast forward again, it hasn’t slowed down at all actually which is really great,” said Susan Veres, vice president marketing and communications for the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC).

“We finished the year last year (and) interest in the remaining parcels of land was really quite high so our focus last year and this year will be on commercial development, less on the multifamily side.”

Prairies to lead country in economic growth this year

CALGARY — Saskatoon and Regina will be the fastest growing metropolitan economies in the country this year with Calgary and Edmonton also forecast to have some of the strongest growth rates in the country, according to the Conference Board of Canada.

In releasing its Metropolitan Outlook-Winter 2013, the board said those municipalities are not “booming” like they were prior to the prior to the 2008-09 recession.

Total assessment values increase by almost 8%

Assessed values of single-family homes in Airdrie are on the rise.

Staff presented Airdrie City council with a report on the changes and shifts in the 2013 assessment, measured year over year, Feb. 4.

The report revealed a 4.79 per cent increase in the total number of parcels and a 7.94 per cent increase in total assessment values, including both residential and non-residential properties, between 2012 and 2013.
