High River could get new shopping centre in 2014

A proposed commercial shopping centre in the north end of High River is inching closer to reality after town council gave first reading Monday to two necessary subdivision bylaws.

If approved, the bylaws will designate the intended site –located just off Highway 2A- as a commercial shopping centre, paving the way for construction to begin on the Canadian Tire anchored mall.

Community attempts to woo businesses to Petrolia Mall through the Internet

EDMONTON – With the foreclosure process on a deteriorating Edmonton strip mall now complete, community volunteers are turning to the Internet in their efforts to see the site restored to its former glory.

Petrolia Mall, at 114th Street and 40th Avenue, was built in the 1960s and was once a dynamic and vibrant part of the neighbourhood.

Another brick in the mall — Lego comes to Southgate

EDMONTON – Fans of Lego are falling to pieces after discovering that the toy company is opening a store in Edmonton this summer.

“There’s a lot of happiness and there’s a lot of concern over our wallets,” said Chris Gray, of the Northern Alberta Lego Users Group, whose members create massive projects out of the plastic bricks. Gray and another member built a model of the Alberta Legislature on display at the building’s interpretive centre.

Capilano Mall to get an $11-million facelift

EDMONTON – Capilano Mall is set to undergo an $11-million redevelopment that will turn it into a partial strip mall.

The portion of the enclosed shopping centre between Winners and Safeway will be demolished starting in the spring. Construction will then start on an unenclosed shopping centre that will see store doors open into the parking lot between those two anchor tenants. The remaining enclosed parts of the mall will also be renovated and a stand-alone pad will be added as well.

Big changes at Prairie Mall

While changes are already underway at Prairie Mall, patrons can expect more in the coming months.

In addition to the recently announced transformation of Zellers into Target on the north side of the mall, officials confirmed Monday that dollar store ‘Buck or Two’ will also close its doors, but they would not confirm the fate of the space in which it occupied.

Neighbours try to sweet-talk developers into rebuilding Petrolia Mall

EDMONTON – Petrolia Mall has seen better days.

The parking lot is full of potholes, most of the space inside is vacant, and now even the Giant Tiger anchor store has pulled out.

“The mall used to be a really healthy place, full of good businesses that served the local residents. In the last couple decades, the whole thing has just fallen into a bit of a ruin,” says Michael Walters, civics director with the local community league.

Sears selling stake at mall

Sears Canada is selling its 40 per cent interest in the Medicine Hat Mall, but that won’t affect its store operations or bring a new owner into the shopping centre, according to the company.

Sears says that it has agreed to sell for $43 million the leasehold stake in the facility to Sleeping Bay Building Corp. – the current majority owner, and believed to be the parent company of mall operator T&T properties.

The announcement was made early Wednesday morning from Sears’ Toronto offices.

New GP mall will focus on home decor companies

The major development going up east of the airport, at 116 Street and 100 Avenue, is indeed a new mall called Westgate Centre that will prominently feature large home decor companies, owner WAM Development Group confirmed.

Most of the space is already leased, and the confirmed new tenants for the spring 2013 grand opening include: HomeSense, Pier 1 Imports, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bouclair Home, children’s clothing company carter’s and OshKosh B’gosh, and Dollar Tree.
