Residents glad for first glimpse of planned Abbottsfield Rec Centre

EDMONTON – While their parents filled every seat in the makeshift gym at the Abbottsfield Recreation Centre for a community meeting, children gathered in one corner to draw and colour.

Saturday’s scene illustrated both the neighbourhood’s love of its aging and cramped community hall and the need for a new one.

Staples: A new suburb on Edmonton’s northeast farmland makes sense

EDMONTON – City council made the right call to move ahead with the plan for a massive new residential neighbourhood in the city’s far northeast corner, the Horse Hills region along the North Saskatchewan River.

I say this even as I favour a denser, less sprawling city. There’s also no doubt that Horse Hills farmers spoke out eloquently at the city’s two-day public hearing on the area structure plan about the need to preserve farm land, none more so than farmer Andrew Voogd.

Mission neighbourhood association forming

A neighbourhood in Grande Prairie’s southwest end is on the verge of becoming an official association, and residents of all three Mission neighbourhoods are encouraged to attend an information session on Wednesday night.

If successful, Mission will become the city’s second neighbourhood association, joining Pinnacle Ridge.

Edmonton councillors vote to relaunch expropriation effort at City Centre Airport

EDMONTON – City council voted Wednesday to restart expropriation efforts at City Centre Airport, one step toward closing the facility and building a neighbourhood.

The city’s first expropriation bid ground to a halt in December after lawyers for the companies leasing space at the airport took the city to court. They successfully argued the first hearing officer appointed by the province had a conflict of interest because of statements he made.

Neighbourhood associations help create connections

Building a stronger sense of community, getting to know your neighbours and working together are some of the goals of Grande Prairie Neighbourhood Associations.

The official launch of the program was rolled out on Thursday at the Royal Canadian Legion in front of a crowd of more than 60 people including many elected city officials and enforcements services personnel.
