Winter not so tough on pine beetles

A mild winter has given the Mountain Pine Beetle an early lead in the continuing battle between them and the pine tree population.

A recent value survey conducted by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, with samples coming from the Peace River region, showed that more adult beetles were able to survey the winter, readying themselves for feasting later this summer.

Voracious mountain pine beetles on hold in forests northwest of Edmonton

FOX CREEK — Eyeing a stack of rough lumber, Stefan Demharter spots the telltale blue stain fungus spread by the Mountain Pine Beetle.

“It’s here, and there, and there … there is quite of bit of it, but this is a good news story. It means we are cutting the trees before they’re dead,” said Demharter, Millar Western’s vice-president of wood products.

SW Alberta free from pine beetles

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development announced this week that they found little no pine beetle activity in southwestern Alberta.

Officials set 24 bait sites and 9 funnel traps, which all revealed little or no mountain pine beetle activity in southwest Alberta, resulting in no necessary control operations in the mountain forests between the Red Deer river and the US border.
