Province, feds, shell out millions for needed road construction projects in Strathcona County

Four road projects in Strathcona County are getting a $3.3-million boost from the feds and the province, both governments announce Wednesday.

Funding for the projects includes $1.1 million from the federal Gas Tax fund and $2.1 million from Alberta’s Basic Municipal Transportation Grant.

Sturgeon County to study realignment of Starkey Road

County council was skeptical this week about plans to spend $29 million to realign Starkey Road – especially since they included an underpass for moose.

Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to spend $500,000 to do detailed engineering studies for the first phase of the realignment of Starkey Road. Mayor Don Rigney and councillors Don McGeachy and David Kluthe were not present.

Foothills cuts millions from cost of road upgrade

Officials with the MD of Foothills were able to shave millions off the cost of fixing a busy road in the Millarville area.

On March 13 Foothills council approved a $1.37 million plan to repair and resurface the Racetrack Road between Black Diamond and the Millarville Racetrack over the next three years.

After an earlier plan to completely rebuild and pave the 11 km road at a cost $6.7 million was revealed in 2011, MD officials went back to the drawing board to find a less expensive option.

Province continues quest to return Deerfoot Trail to Calgary control

EDMONTON — The Tory government still wants to return Deerfoot Trail to municipal control, and could look to begin talks with the city of Calgary in the next few months, says Transportation Minister Ric McIver.

However, the MLA for Calgary-Hays and a former city alderman said there is no sense of urgency to the issue, which would require extensive negotiations and a final agreement with the city before any handover.

Update: Mandel calls bike-lane plans a nightmare

EDMONTON – Edmonton’s bike-lane construction plans are turning into a “nightmare” that is pushing cars off the road, says Mayor Stephen Mandel.

“(The project) is becoming something more far-reaching than I think council had once anticipated,” Mandel said Wednesday at council’s transportation committee.

Making downtown Edmonton more uptown

EDMONTON – Pedestrians hemmed in by the drab fabric-coated wire fences protecting the upheaval on Jasper Avenue might sympathize with cattle on their way to the feed lot.

Two blocks of Edmonton’s Main Street have been lined with barricades and narrowed to one lane in each direction since last spring, as Jasper Avenue undergoes its largest transformation since the city fathers first put down asphalt.
