City expanding project using Bluetooth data to give drivers travel times

Calgarians know where they’re going and now, more of them will know how long it’ll take to get there.

The success of a project that uses available Bluetooth data from vehicles on Deerfoot Tr. to calculate average travel times and display the information on electronic message boards along the city’s busiest traffic artery has prompted an expansion.

Traffic counters back in the Fort

Drivers making their way through the centre of the city may have noticed they’re being watched.

On top of all the construction workers pulled off to the side of the highway, police cars set up with photo radar, and vehicles stopped just because they can, Highway 21 within the city limits has been playing host to traffic counters.

Economic spinoffs will be felt in St. Albert

Villeneuve Airport may house over 400 airplanes one day, says a local business owner who is building hangar space at the airport.

Eldon Gjesdal, of Edmonton-based Energy Efficient Homes, recently expanded his operation from constructing homes to building hangars at Villeneuve Airport. He expects aviation and business activity at the airport to grow exponentially.

Bad year for potholes

While it might not be as bad as Edmonton, St. Albert’s pothole situation is definitely worse than in any recent year in memory, say city officials.

“I’ve been at the city for seven years and this is probably the worst of it and I think it’s because of the winter we had,” said public works director Dan Rites. “We are still in good shape and the roads that are giving us trouble … the roads are rough, but we are looking at fixing them.”

Centre Avenue open

Over a year of work has come to fruition with the opening of Centre Avenue early June 7.

Crews started breaking down the barricades to the area around 6 a.m. opening the new main artery through the Quarry commercial site. By 7 a.m. the new traffic lights were activated on Railway St. W. and Griffin Rd. W.

Construction to start on Yankee Valley Blvd.

The biggest item on the City’s road improvement to-do list will likely start construction in late June.

Funding and final reading was approved by city council on May 21 to widen Yankee Valley Boulevard between East Lake Boulevard and Kings Heights Gate, turning the single lane roadway into a four-way divided highway with a median and street lighting.

ICE revisions approved

Council voted to revise the ICE routes returning from Calgary in the morning to increase reverse-flow ridership, attempting to better utilize the service, May 21.

While ICE has been successful transporting people to Calgary in the morning and back to Airdrie in the afternoon, the reverse trips only account for roughly two per cent of total ridership.
