Passengers make local airport history

A record-breaking year at the Fort McMurray Airport (YMM) continues to fly even higher, with October making history as the busiest month in the airport’s existence.

Passenger numbers released for the month show nearly 86,000 people traveled through the airport, an increase of 30% — or more than 20,000 passengers — from the same period in 2011.

Federal belt tightening, U.S. ad campaign a double blow to Alberta tourism

EDMONTON – Federal cuts to tourist marketing and the launch of an American advertising campaign will make it tougher for Alberta’s tourism industry to follow up on a good year, says the head of Travel Alberta.

“It’s really unfortunate that at the most important time, when the big giant in the south is starting to wake up, that we’re seeing this budget cut,” Bruce Okabe, president and CEO of the province’s tourism marketing agency, said Wednesday during an open house with Edmonton-region travel operators.

City officials want to spend $360,000 to make Edmonton a winter travel destination

Edmonton city officials are once again looking into making the City of Champions a winter travel destination and they want to spend more than $360,000 to come up with a plan to do it.

“(Winter) is a major part of who we are as a city,” said Coun. Ben Henderson, who serves as co-chair for a new Winter City Strategy initiative, which is still in it’s conceptual stage.
