29-storey hotel and office tower proposed at Edmonton’s historic Kelly Ramsey block

EDMONTON – The fire-ravaged Kelly Ramsey block on Rice Howard Way is being gutted and two adjoining structures will be razed for a $250-million office and hotel project.

The south and east facades of the historic twin buildings on 101A Avenue will be dismantled and rebuilt as the base of a 29-storey tower, bricks and windows will be reused or reproduced, but most of the remainder will go, says a city report released Thursday.

Leduc County wants Edmonton to end its ‘heavy handed’ annexation bid

EDMONTON – Leduc County, worried about losing millions in future tax revenue, wants Edmonton to abandon its “confrontational” annexation bid and return to negotiations.

Mayor John Whaley said Thursday the county was “surprised” at the size of Edmonton’s bid — 15,600 hectares from the city’s southern boundary to the international airport west of Highway 2. “We don’t think they need that much land.”

Landlord Accused of Endangering Tenants

A Queens landlord who authorities said had packed nearly 50 people in illegally converted apartments, some in garages and cellars, was charged with reckless endangerment and other crimes on Wednesday, reflecting a growing concern about the kind of overcrowded housing that has been cited in several fatal fires in recent years.
