Council balks at tax increase

Strathcona County council was strict with its direction to administration at a budget meeting on Wednesday, May 29: keep service levels the same without increasing taxes.

The meeting, which marked the second gathering of council to discuss the 2014 Business Plan and Budget, included a presentation from administration for possible revenue increases in 2014.

Goodbye Wild Rose, hello Banff-Airdrie

Changes announced by the federal electoral boundary commission means the riding of Wild Rose will soon cease to exist.

Effective the next national election Cochrane will be part of the new Banff-Airdrie riding, it was announced last week. The redrawing of federal electoral boundaries in Alberta has split off the northern portion of the Wild Rose constituency into a new riding to form the new Red Deer-Mountain View.

May a record month for Calgary real estate?

As we approach the end of May, it looks like Calgary’s resale real estate market could be setting a couple of records.

According to the Calgary Real Estate Board, month-to-date until May 29, the average MLS sale price for a single-family home is $523,071, up 3.74 per cent from the same period a year ago.
