Demands of growth worry homebuilders

As Alberta’s premier spoke about building infrastructure between provinces to support Canada’s energy industry, Calgary builders called for local support to meet housing needs created by that economy — and help to protect affordability for homebuyers.

Driven by the strength of the energy economy, Alberta is likely to attract one million more people in the next 20 years, Premier Alison Redford told a recent meeting of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Calgary Region.

Triple M expanding

It’s busy times for Alberta’s home builders. And one of the biggest, Triple M Housing in Lethbridge, is expanding to meet the demand.

Contractors are completing work on a 43,000-square-foot addition to Triple M’s new modular home plant on the city’s northside. It’s being built in response to the popularity of the company’s drywall option for new homes.

Edmonton builders keen on new civic office tower

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton received 15 formal expressions of interest to provide new office space for civic staff in downtown Edmonton.

More than half the proposals were for new office towers.

That reflects an increasingly tight market for office space and the lure of a major tenant, and could yield some creative ideas, say those in the industry.

Housing Still Precarious in Obama’s Second Term

The housing market is on the slow road to recovery. Home prices in the last three months rose in 120 out of 149 metropolitan markets surveyed by the National Association of Realtors.

Compare that to just 39 rising metros a year ago. The median home price is up 7.6 percent from a year ago, the strongest year-over-year increase since the first quarter of 2006.

Parade of Homes saw 40,000 visitors this year

The 2012 Parade of Homes recently wrapped up for this year and builders couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

The number of serious viewers increased dramatically over last year and there were reports of numerous sales directly resulting from the show. Final numbers indicate that approximately 40,000 visitors walked through this year’s show homes.
