New report compares Lethbridge economic growth with other mid-sized cities

The Conference Board of Canada recently released its Mid-Sized Cities Outlook 2013. The report will give business and government leaders data necessary to make decisions about local industry and economy.

“For a number of years, we have been encouraging the economic think tanks to create this kind of report as deeper economic trends require strong understanding of core impacts over time,” says Economic Development Lethbridge Chief Executive Officer Cheryl Dick. “Going forward, this will help us to better understand and compare our competitive environment and interpret the trends for the future.”

Here Are The World’s Fastest And Slowest Growing Economies

We still note, the law of small numbers in the growth economies.  Excluding China from the Top 40, for example,  the 39 fastest growing economies in 2013 have an average size of $78 billion.  This contrasts to the slowest growth economies with an average nominal GDP in dollar of $470.   Note Germany’s rank as the 23rd slowest growth economy.  Furthermore,  5 of top 11 slowest economies are eurozone countries.

Alberta forecast to lead Canadian economic growth in 2014

CALGARY — Alberta’s economic growth this year will be second only to Newfoundland & Labrabor, but Wild Rose Country will top the nation in 2014, according to a new forecast by RBC Economics.

The forecast said Newfoundland & Labrador will lead the country in Real Gross Domestic Product growth this year at 5.1 per cent followed by Alberta at 3.0 per cent.

MD approves growth plan

The MD of Foothills received no opposition to its growth management strategy, however, councillors were reminded the whole municipality is connected.

MD council approved the Foothills’ growth management strategy on April 10 in High River. During the public hearing, which was attended by approximately 15 people, the MD received praise for the 45-page document from residents who spoke at the public portion of the meeting.

Alberta’s government needs to tackle growth problems: think-tank

A University of Alberta think-tank says the province is in for a “slew of boom time problems” if the province doesn’t quell swelling development.

The Parkland Institute says Alberta is seeing unprecedented levels of production and investment in Alberta’s oilsands, and it’s having detrimental impacts across the board.

Census shows more growth

New data outlined in the Strathcona County 2012 Municipal Census Report reveals that the municipality’s population is up by five per cent over the last three years.

Released on Wednesday, April 10, the 2012 census focused on county changes over the last three years, including population growth, as well as a breakdown for changes in Sherwood Park and rural areas of the county, such as farms, country residents and rural hamlets.
