Alberta economic snapshot for January 19, 2013

CALGARY, AB, Jan. 19, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Alberta factories, refineries, and meat packing plants are the economic engines for many communities throughout Alberta. But in November, they were running a bit slower – a trend that has been developing over the past year or so.

Shipments of manufactured goods totalled $6.14 billion in November, down about 1.8 per cent from the previous month, and the second lowest total to date in 2012. Over the first 11 months of last year, manufacturing shipments are still about 6.4 per cent higher than the same period in 2011, but the trend has been decidedly slower since peaking near the end of 2011.

For clues to Canada’s housing future, look to Australia

Let’s put aside, just for a minute, the idea that there is a housing bubble in Canada.

It there is a housing bubble, then we know it will burst at some point, and that the fallout will be singularly unpleasant. After all, we watched the bursting of the bubble in the U.S. take place in real time, just as if it was being broadcast on some kind of gigantic, high-definition television screen. We know how that story ends.

CALGARY, AB, Dec. 15, 2012/ Troy Media/ – Sometimes life is one step forward and two steps back. That’s exactly how it must feel for certain Alberta manufacturers in October – and least according to the recent data on manufacturing released this morning.

Total manufacturing sales in the province slid to $6.29 billion in October, a drop of 1.4 per cent from its level in September (adjusted for seasonality). Much of the drop was due to a plunge in one particular category of manufacturing: food processing. It dropped to $876 million, down a whopping 15 per cent from its recent high in August.

City rejects Chinook’s Edge Waskasoo housing proposal

Chinook’s Edge School Division is looking forward to the creation of an area redevelopment plan for Waskasoo after its plans for housing were rejected on Monday.

Red Deer city council defeated first reading of the Waskasoo Neighbourhood Area Structure Plan that would have allowed development of 16 houses along 45th Avenue and three more on a portion of 59th Street. Council felt it wasn’t the right move without an area redevelopment plan that would reflect the vision of the property.

Alberta’s unique housing cycle

CALGARY, AB, Dec. 5, 2012/ Troy Media/ – Alberta real estate has marched to its own rhythm for the better part of a decade now. The real estate craze that has gripped most of the nation since 2009 has largely bypassed a province where the memory of a bursting real estate bubble was still fresh. Over the years, Alberta has managed what is hoped the rest of the country will experience: a soft landing.

A soft landing in real estate happens when, after a spell of exuberance in the market, balance is restored without any major correction in price. Instead, the market returns to balance as time takes its toll.
