WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. housing starts rose less than expected in August amid a sharp slowdown in the multifamily sector, but a surge in permits for single-family homes pointed to sustained strengthen in the housing market recovery.

Value of building permits balloon in Calgary region

CALGARY — Contractors took out building permits worth $843.9 million in the Calgary region in July, up 56.6 per cent from June, says Statistics Canada.

Canada July building permits hit record, housing tame

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s construction sector showed surprising strength in July, mainly because of a sudden jump in plans for commercial buildings, with housing showing just a modest rise, according to Statistics Canada data released on Monday.

Edmonton permits soar as new bridge looms

City of Edmonton building permit values increased about 40 per cent for the first five months of 2013, hitting $1.90 billion. That figure is also up 67 per cent compared to the city’s five-year average for the same period.

Development permits increase in county

Development is on the rise in the County of Lethbridge as reflected in the number of permits issued so far this year.

Hilary Janzen, senior planner and development officer, reported to county council last Thursday that she has issued 96 development permits as of July 23.

Schools boost permit tally

Construction approvals for a pair of schools in Red Deer gave the city’s June building permit tally a $20-million boost and helped push the six-month total for 2013 ahead of the figure for the same period in 2012.
