Hazeldean cellphone tower gets go-ahead despite city objections

EDMONTON – The federal government has overruled city opposition and approved construction of a controversial cellphone tower in Hazeldean.

The city notified Industry Canada last summer that a tower Rogers plans for the Gerald Zetter Care Centre, 9649 71st Ave., would be visually negative, current planning branch manager Scott Mackie says.

West Hillhurst residents fighting proposed cellphone tower

Residents of West Hillhurst are fighting a proposed 25-metre cellphone tower, arguing it’s not appropriate in a residential neighbourhood and that the company, Telus, isn’t open to other options.

“I think they’re (Telus) kind of selective in indicating where their radius of best capacity or coverage areas are,” said Jo Larson, a resident who lives close to the Kensington Legion, the proposed site of the tower.

Proposed development for Malmo sparks community concern

EDMONTON- Almost seven years after the city approved a Malmo Plains seniors’ project, the community is fighting a new development proposed for the site that would be twice as big.

Westcorp Developments Inc. was allowed, despite strong local opposition in January 2006, to build a 250-unit complex, including a 16-storey apartment tower, on a 2.5-hectare property near 51st Avenue and 117th Street.

City space crunch could spur downtown’s tallest building

EDMONTON – A plan to consolidate civic staff downtown could spur the construction of Edmonton’s largest office tower, a commercial real estate agent says.

The city put out a formal request this week for interested building owners to outline what space they could provide, what it would cost and other details.
