Partnership in waste management project in jeopardy

Participation from foothills municipalities in one of the largest waste management projects in Alberta could be in jeopardy after the local landfill committee balked at paying its membership fee.

The Foothills Regional Landfill Commission (FRLC) is currently a member of the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Association (SAEWA) which is comprised of 16 waste management authorities representing more than 60 municipalities. Policing and waste management priority for Red Deer city council

City council has business to settle before calling it a term in October.

With only nine months remaining before the next civic election, Red Deer councillors say there will be no slowing down as they try to make headway on a number of city projects, plans and policies.

High on the priority list is working with the RCMP following the much-anticipated police service levels and standards review. Once the standards are in place later this year, council will be in a better position to monitor whether the needs are being met in the community and to deploy the appropriate resources when required.

Edmonton wants a slice of the global trash business

EDMONTON – Edmonton wants to tap into the multibillion-dollar international trash business by setting up the first city-owned company to bid on projects in China.

Waste Re-Solutions Edmonton is creating a joint venture with Beijing-based Canfit Resource Recovery Technologies in hopes of running the waste management system for Beijing’s ETOWN industrial suburb, Mayor Stephen Mandel said Tuesday.
