Edmonton looking at five-per-cent property tax hike in 2014

EDMONTON – Edmonton could see a property tax increase of about five per cent in 2014, according to initial numbers provided Thursday to city council.

The city will need to spend $83 million more next year, mostly for hundreds of extra staff and other costs related to the opening of the LRT line to NAIT, two new recreation centres, three libraries and other facilities, the figures show.

Elementary school boundaries changing in ’14

Red Deer Public Schools has accepted recommendations for changing school boundaries in 2014.

The board accepted suggestions from the Accommodations Committee for changing the boundaries since a new school is opening in Timberlands in the fall of 2014.

This school would become a dual track program. The English program would serve families from the communities of Clearview Extension, Clearview Ridge, College Park, Garden Heights, Timberlands and Timberstone, as well as Vanier Woods and Vanier East.

Bitumen prices should rise in 2014: former Suncor CEO

EDMONTON – The extremely low price for bitumen, which is currently sapping Alberta government revenues, should rise in 2014, according to the former chief executive of Suncor Energy.

But the “serious” situation should remind Albertans about the dangers of having basically one customer for your product, Rick George said during the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation’s annual luncheon on Tuesday at the Shaw Conference Centre.

Coast Edmonton House conversion delayed until 2014

EDMONTON – Coast Edmonton House will remain a hotel longer than expected.

The downtown all-suite hotel at 10205 100th Ave. was to be converted to an apartment building by fall 2013 by owner Maclab Enterprises to take advantage of increased demand for residential housing. The conversion will now be delayed until 2014.
