Building permits off to strong start

Calgary’s building permit applications started off the year on a strong note in January, with a 19 per cent increase in total estimated value and a 14 per cent rise in the number of permits compared to last year.

The estimated value of the 1,160 permits — which includes residential, non-residential and demolition building applications — totalled $278 million in January, up from $233 million during the same month last year, say statistics from the City of Calgary.

Construction jobs are difficult to fill

Construction has been a major driver of hiring in recent months, but now builders are having trouble finding the workers they need.

Friday’s January jobs report showed that construction added 28,000 jobs in January, about 18% of the the jobs created overall. It’s the fourth straight month of strong construction job gains as home building has rebounded. Low mortgage rates, rising home prices and low inventories of new homes for sale are expected to continue to boost the housing recovery through 2013.

Calgary region building permits up more than 10% from last year

CALGARY — The value of building permits in the Calgary region was $372.1 million in November, according to Statistics Canada.

The federal agency reported Thursday that permits in the Calgary census metropolitan area were down 5.9 per cent from the previous month but up 10.8 per cent from a year ago.

In Alberta, building permits hit $1.2 billion in November, up 1.5 per cent on a monthly basis and an increase of 26.3 per cent from November 2011.

City gets first look at proposed RCMP station

FORT SASKATCHEWAN – Fort Saskatchewan city council got a first look at the new $10 million RCMP station being considered to replace the city’s existing facility.

The 3,000 sq. m building, or about 32,000 sq. ft., will sit on the southwest corner of a lot next to the Dow Centennial Centre and provide right turn access on and off Highway 21, with southbound traffic leaving the area via Town Crest Road, a yet to be built street that will link Southfort Blvd. to the Dow Centre’s theatre parking lot.

There is, at this time, no plan to incorporate an intersection to allow a left handed turn onto Highway 15 from the proposed RCMP station.

Housing starts top 2011 level

FORTSASKATCHEWAN- It’s only October, but 2012 will be a stronger year for Fort Saskatchewan new home starts than last year.

In a recent release sent out by the City of Fort Saskatchewan, building permits to date for 2012, including new construction and renovations, have tallied $86,491,969.

This come as a division between residential ($56,000,834), multi-family homes ($12,982,130), commercial construction ($5,906,530), institutional builds ($2,665,500), and both heavy and light industrial activity ($8,986,075).

Single-family residential permits issued have already surpassed those handed out in 2011, reaching 219 over last year’s 203, but still below the 265 that were initiated in 2010.

Momentum building on Edmonton homes front

EDMONTON-Edmonton’s MLS home sales and prices in October were up from the same month last year, according to the Realtors Association of Edmonton.

The all-residential average selling price in Edmonton’s Multiple Listing Service was $324,924 in October, up 2.1 per cent year-over-year, the group said. Single-family detached homes were priced on average at $372,061, a 2.9-per-cent increase from October 2011.
