Council gives tentative approval to downtown arena deal but final $55 million still missing

EDMONTON – A quiet boost in provincial infrastructure funding will pay almost half the final $100 million needed to build Edmonton’s downtown arena, but some councillors fear the city could be stuck with the remainder.

Edmonton’s share of the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) was $3 million higher than expected in the March 7 provincial budget, which would cover annual payments on a $45-million loan, city manager Simon Farbrother said Wednesday.

$10 million raised, or taxes go up

Taxes are not expected to rise in order to pay for new Event Centre in Medicine Hat… unless city and private sector miss a $10 million fundraising goal laid out in a funding proposal that will be presented today.

The Corporate Services Committee will discuss and decide on the proposal this afternoon at their regular meeting at City Hall.

$25-million questions

If Lethbridge hopes to attract major shows and conventions, the city needs new facilities for about 2,000 guests. That’s what the Lethbridge Exhibition board is proposing, to replace smaller facilities that are well past their prime. But if city council agrees to a $25-million grant, what assurance is there that Edmonton and Ottawa will come up with another $50 million?

Devon, Calmar and other county municipalities see dip in MSI dollars

Despite the provincial deficit, the City of Leduc, Leduc County, the Town of Beaumont and the Village of Warburg will all receive an increase to their Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) dollars for 2013.

The annual allocation of dollars as part of the program allows municipalities to invest in infrastructure, with city officials deciding how the funds should be allocated as per the guidelines.

Federal announcement to put $250M into Edmonton LRT project

EDMONTON – The federal government announced Thursday it will contribute $250 million to development of Edmonton’s southeast LRT line.

It’s the largest investment by the P3 Canada Fund, designed to support public-private partnerships, which the city has determined is the best way to complete the $1.8-billion line, federal Public Works Minister Rona Ambrose said.
