EDMONTON — Alberta’s fiscal situation has been improving recently, but that doesn’t mean the provincial government is set to open the taps on spending, Finance Minister Doug Horner said Monday as the 2013 budget received royal assent.

Despite the provincial deficit, the City of Leduc, Leduc County, the Town of Beaumont and the Village of Warburg will all receive an increase to their Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) dollars for 2013.
The annual allocation of dollars as part of the program allows municipalities to invest in infrastructure, with city officials deciding how the funds should be allocated as per the guidelines.

The latest federal budget deficit numbers suggest the shortfall is shrinking faster than even the government expected, and prompting speculation Ottawa could be out of the red a year ahead of schedule.
The Finance department said Friday November’s federal budget deficit was $1.9 billion, a slightly bigger shortfall than the $1.6 billion recorded in the same month of 2011.

EDMONTON – Alberta continues to be on track to run a deficit as high as $3 billion in the 2012-13 fiscal year, provincial finance officials said Wednesday.
Speaking to the second-quarter results, Finance Minister Doug Horner said the budget problems revealed in the first-quarter financial update continued during July, August and September.
