NLRT on track as project enters its final year of construction

EDMONTON – With its graceful wooden arches and attached pedestrian mall on a closed portion of 105th Avenue, the largely completed MacEwan LRT station should be a hit with passengers and local residents.

But as Edmonton’s $755 million, 3.3-kilometre north transit line enters its final year of construction, there is still plenty to do underground.

Calgary’s mayor to focus on transportation in 2013

Calgary’s mayor plans to make transportation one of his big goals in the coming year.

In 2013, Naheed Nenshi plans on working on problem areas and congestion and says one roadway that needs some work is Crowchild Trail.

Calgary city council rejected a plan created for Crowchild Trail earlier this month, voting unanimously to send transportation planners back to the drawing board.

LRT Mandel’s top priority as Edmonton council enters last year of term

EDMONTON – Edmonton should finally nail down funding for the $1.8-billion southeast LRT route next year and construction might start in 2015, Mayor Stephen Mandel says.

“I’m quite confident that we have all the tools in place … We have to take a chance at the same time, as we took on the north line (to NAIT),” he said this week during a year-end interview.

Will Calgary’s C-Train extend north or south 1st?

It’s been assumed for years that southeast Calgary will be where the next LRT line will be built, but there are some thinking a north-central line is needed first.

There are still tens of thousands of Calgarians in the northern half of the city who live nowhere near the C-Train, many of whom ride buses down a busy Centre Street corridor.

What’s next for Calgary’s LRT system?

The completion of the West LRT line, which opens on Dec. 10, means the attention now turns to what project will be next — and the pressure for a southeast line is growing as the population of the quadrant continues to leap.

Anyone who lives in communities like Douglasdale, McKenzie Towne or Copperfield know that a single traffic accident on Deerfoot Trail during rush hour can cause major delays on the way to work.

Calgary rental prices up as West LRT readies to open

Calgary’s newest section of the LRT line is set to change the face of the west side of the city when it opens next week.

Oneika Brown lives in a prime location — just steps away from a brand new station on the West LRT — but the added convenience comes at a cost.

Brown has been told her rent will soon be going from $795 to $995 a month.

Less obtrusive stations proposed for Edmonton’s future northwest LRT route

EDMONTON – Edmonton’s future northwest LRT route will feature smaller, less obtrusive stations than on existing lines to help them fit into surrounding neighbourhoods, a recommended concept plan shows.

The plan, being presented at public meetings next week, outlines such changes as adding kiss-and-ride stops at three stations, an access lane to the Castle Downs playground and spray park, and longer left-turn lanes at 145th Avenue and 153rd Avenue.

Whitemud Park not amused about expropriation plans

EDMONTON – Owners of the Whitemud Amusement Park worry mini-golfers and go-kart drivers could be out of luck next summer if council moves quickly to expropriate land for the southeast LRT.

They came to city hall Monday to ask for help finding new real estate – the permission to remain open through summer 2013 and help finding a similar piece of land for the future.

LRT tunnel connecting NAIT to Churchill station unveiled

EDMONTON – A milestone was reached Friday on NAIT LRT construction when political leaders unveiled a tunnel connecting the new system to Churchill station.

“It’s very exciting just being able to link the community together,” Mayor Stephen Mandel told a news conference on the Churchill platform, with an LRT train showing its destination as NAIT station as a backdrop.
