City council sets 2013 tax rates 


Red Deer City Council set the new property tax rates for 2013 at Monday’s meeting.

The combined tax increases required to fund the municipal tax requirement as well as the requisitioned amounts from Alberta Education and the Piper Creek Foundation result in total tax increases of 2.24% for residential property, 2.11% for multi-family property and 6.59% for non-residential property.

Tax rate up less than 1 per cent

Strathcona County residents can expect to receive their tax notices in the coming weeks, following the final approval of the 2013 property tax rate by county council on Tuesday, April 23.

According to associate commissioner of Corporate Services George Huybregts, the final approval for the county’s tax rate is like an annual “right of spring” and might be a happy surprise for some residents, as the rate went up by less than one per cent.

Town of Peace River reviewing taxi fares

The Town of Peace River will be sitting down, in the near future, with the three local cab operators (Peace River Taxi, 12 Foot Davis Taxi and Phyl’s Taxi) to gather input about the possibility of introducing a taxi fare system.

The town, which does not regulate taxi fares within the existing Taxi Bylaw, has already canvassed other communities, similar in size to Peace River, to see how they have dealt fares.
