Starts Climbing

As temperatures in Calgary increased in May, so did the city’s housing starts.

“The trend of total housing starts increased slightly in May, due to strong construction in both the single-detached and multi-family markets,” said Richard Cho, senior market analyst for Calgary with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Housing demand to continue strength

As total construction starts of homes of all kinds rises in 2012 to what is expected to be the highest level in five years, demand for housing in the Calgary area will likely remain strong through 2013, predicts a federal agency.

“For 2012, this will be actually the highest number of total housing starts since 2007,” says senior market analyst Richard Cho of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Calgary region housing starts stable compared with last year

CALGARY— Housing starts in the Calgary region remained at the same level as a year ago in October, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

The agency reported Thursday that total starts in the Calgary census metropolitan area of 980 were down just one unit compared with October 2011. Single-detached units rose by eight per cent during the month to 440 units while multi-family starts dipped by six per cent to 540.

Housing starts top 2011 level

FORTSASKATCHEWAN- It’s only October, but 2012 will be a stronger year for Fort Saskatchewan new home starts than last year.

In a recent release sent out by the City of Fort Saskatchewan, building permits to date for 2012, including new construction and renovations, have tallied $86,491,969.

This come as a division between residential ($56,000,834), multi-family homes ($12,982,130), commercial construction ($5,906,530), institutional builds ($2,665,500), and both heavy and light industrial activity ($8,986,075).

Single-family residential permits issued have already surpassed those handed out in 2011, reaching 219 over last year’s 203, but still below the 265 that were initiated in 2010.

How to Play the Housing ‘Boom’

Housing boom? Not yet, but anybody who plays the stock market knows, you get in before the boom, not during it.

That is why the stocks of the home builders [XHB  24.535 -0.205  (-0.83%) ] are up triple digits from a year ago, as housing starts slowly rise from the ashes. But investors, if they believe in this recovery, should be looking beyond the builders to the more than 30 sectors that benefit directly from housing.

Unimpressive housing starts for Lethbridge

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation released this week housing start statistics for September and Lethbridge is up slightly.

The city saw 48 single-detached housing starts last month, compared to 40 at the same time last year. All other starts, including multi-family, were at only 4, half of what it was last September, bringing total starts to an increase of only 4.
