Just east of Edmonton, you’ll find a sprawling, vibrant community made up of a wide variety of residents, businesses, attractions and landscapes.

“Strathcona County is one of the very few municipalities that is considered a specialized municipality,” said Linda Osinchuk, mayor of Strathcona County. “What that means is we have a blend of urban and rural status. We have nine hamlets, Sherwood Park being the largest hamlet with 63,000 people. The total population is the third largest in the province at close to 94,000.”

Sturgeon oil refinery backers swim against the current

Ian MacGregor has grown accustomed to the outsized nature of his ambitions. To build the oil refinery he has pursued for years, he will need $5.7-billion. He will need 20 million hours of work. He will need to overcome history: North America has not seen the construction of a major new refinery since 1984.

Study examines Hwy. 15 twinning

An update on the functional planning study being conducted on the twinning needs for a section of Highway 15 was presented to Strathcona County council its last meeting in October.

The functional planning study evaluates the twinning needs of the section of the highway from Fort Saskatchewan at Range Road 220 to Highway 830 north, or Range Road 210, approximately 11 kilometres of roadway.

Plans for Old Strathcona LRT face delays

EDMONTON- Planning for an Old Strathcona LRT line likely faces continued delays after councillors balked Wednesday at doing work unlikely to be needed for years.

The so-called central area circulator is a low-floor LRT loop intended to link Bonnie Doon Mall, the University of Alberta and downtown, passing through some of Edmonton’s most densely populated neighbourhoods.

Economy hinges on big projects

Members of the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce received a presentation from the chief economist for the City of Edmonton in October, with the key message being that the regional economy will hold strong in the short term, but the outlook is less optimistic for the longer term if certain projects are not approved.

Mayor talks business strategy

Strathcona County Mayor Linda Osinchuk gave a speech to members of the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce on Thursday morning, regarding the idea of Strathcona County being open for business.

“ ‘Open for Business’ is one of those four areas that when I became mayor, that I really thought and the team here, our council, really wanted to enhance and embrace,” Osinchuk said.

Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue prays for angel developer

EDMONTON – Old Strathcona businesses are now banking on the goodwill of developers to add more pedestrian and festival space to Whyte Avenue.

The old gas station site at Whyte Avenue and 105th Street — left vacant and contaminated for 14 years — has been cleaned up, and is expected to go on the market before year end.
