City nets surplus in ’13 operations

Thanks to population growth and construction, the city recorded a $1.5-million surplus last year. And most of the city-owned utilities turned a profit as well.

Strathcona County’s 2013 operating activity resulted in a $15.9 million surplus for the period ending Dec. 31, 2013, up from $13.4 million for the same period the previous year.

Alberta budget replaces years of deficits with $1.1 billion surplus

EDMONTON – Alberta will end its string of six consecutive deficits with a $1.1-billion consolidated surplus this year, but the Redford government will continue to borrow billions for capital programs, Finance Minister Doug Horner said Thursday as he unveiled the 2014-15 provincial budget.

Alberta budget on track for operational surplus, capital spending deficit

Alberta brought in $2.7 billion more revenue than expected in the first nine months of the fiscal year, but went over-budget on health care, social programs and education by $1.1 billion, Finance Minister Doug Horner reported Wednesday.

Canada unexpectedly posts first trade surplus in 22 months

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada unexpectedly posted a trade surplus of C$75 million ($70.1 million) in October, the first in 22 months, as imports fell at a faster rate than exports, Statistics Canada data indicated on Wednesday.
