More Canadians file own taxes, but some miss out on savings: survey

Canadians are increasingly preparing their tax returns themselves, but some individuals might be missing out on significant savings, says a new study.

Almost half of Canadians (46 per cent) take the “do-it-yourself” approach come tax-reporting time, rather than seeking counsel from professionals, family or friends, according to a survey published Wednesday by the Bank of Montreal.

Many of those planning on buying a home are first-time homebuyers: RBC poll

TORONTO – Fewer Canadians are planning to purchase a home in the next two years, but more than a third of those will be first-time homebuyers, according to a study released Tuesday.

The annual poll by Royal Bank (TSX:RY) found that 15 per cent of those surveyed say they’re likely to buy in the next two years, a drop from 27 per cent from the previous year.

Land survey of Edmonton-area property centre of disciplinary hearing

EDMONTON – A 1995 land survey of Joe Koopmans’ Edmonton-area property is at the centre of an upcoming disciplinary hearing.

The Alberta Land Surveyors’ Association has compelled Amar Surveys of Calgary to appear Wednesday at the in-camera hearing in Edmonton. As the complainant, Koopmans will also be in attendance, and said he expects to tell his version of a conflict that has its roots in a 1995 survey of his family’s nine hectares located about eight kilometres southwest of the River Cree Casino.

Edmonton-area house prices to increase by less than one per cent in 2013: survey

EDMONTON – Edmonton home prices will rise slightly this year, while sales will decrease, says the latest Royal LePage House Price Survey released Tuesday.

The real-estate marketing firm forecasts Edmonton-region homes will sell an average of 0.6 per cent higher in 2013 than in 2012. Sales activity is forecast to decrease 3.4 per cent year-over-year.

Calgary house prices forecast to increase 2.5% this year: Royal LePage

CALGARY — By the end of 2013, average house prices in Calgary are expected to increase 2.5 per cent, while most of Canada is expecting price appreciation to flatten, according to the Royal LePage House Price Survey and Markey Survey Forecast released Tuesday.

And while Calgary will see a nine per cent hike in sales activity this year over last year, nationally the resale housing market will experience a decline of five per cent.

Americans view Britain, not Canada, as closest ally: Survey

OTTAWA – Americans like Canadians a lot and vice versa, but the U.S. perceives Britain as its closest ally, according to a new survey that also suggests Canucks are a distrustful bunch when it comes to other countries.

The Abacus Data survey of 1,068 Canadians and 1,012 Americans provides some insights into Canada’s relationship with its largest trading partner and how both countries feel about other countries.
