Town pays off contribution to interchange project
The Town of High River will fully pay off its financial contribution to the Highway 2 interchange project this year, after council gave the go-ahead last Monday to direct roughly $2.2 million to clear the debt.
The funds will come from the town’s infrastructure reserve fund and will be accounted for in the 2013 operating budget, according to chief financial officer Tom Maier.

Dunmore overpass close to breaking ground
The Dunmore Road overpass at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway is set to begin construction in the next few weeks.
The overpass will consist of two bridges over Dunmore Road as well as embankment, sewer improvements and installation of highway barriers.

Transit plan moves forward following another heated debate
The mayor may not have had as many councillors on board as he previously said, but nevertheless, Cochrane is one step closer to the implementation of an alternative transit plan.
Following a two-hour presentation and subsequent discussion, council gave administration the go-ahead to submit ‘option 2’ to the provincial government as the town’s blueprint for a transit system. The town must provide these plans to ensure that GreenTrip funding is still available, which pays for the majority of the capital costs, such as busses and bus shelters, of launching a transit.

Transportation to revisit plans after contentious Highway 19 meeting
An overwhelmingly negative response to the province’s plans for a realigned Highway 19 and the Edmonton International Airport’s preferred location for a third runway may soon lead to new options being put on the table.
A public meeting on the updated plans packed out a Nisku Inn conference room on Tuesday, Mar. 19. Hundreds of community members, many farmers from the land surrounding the Edmonton International Airport (EIA) and along the highway, came out to hear plans and ask questions of representatives from the airport and the province.

Province continues quest to return Deerfoot Trail to Calgary control
EDMONTON — The Tory government still wants to return Deerfoot Trail to municipal control, and could look to begin talks with the city of Calgary in the next few months, says Transportation Minister Ric McIver.
However, the MLA for Calgary-Hays and a former city alderman said there is no sense of urgency to the issue, which would require extensive negotiations and a final agreement with the city before any handover.

Public open house on Highway 19 plans set for March
The public will soon be getting the chance to be heard and to receive an update on plans for the eventual twinning and realignment of Highway 19.
Provincial representatives have confirmed that in the next few days an announcement will be made of a March 19 public open house at the Nisku Inn regarding the province’s plans for the highway.
Michael Pylko, construction manager for Alberta Transportation, confirmed that the meeting will be taking place.

St. Albert is a smarter city than anyone thought. Unfortunately no one realized it until now.
Initiatives such as using cameras and wireless technology to control traffic lights and mobile phone apps that help transit users find out when the next bus is coming would have won “smart city” awards, if the city had known such awards existed, the city manager said.
