Red Deer regional airport busiest in Alberta

CALGARY, AB, Feb. 6, 2013/ Troy Media/ – Usually when we think of air traffic in Alberta, we think of the big international airports like those in Edmonton and Calgary. We may even think of the airport in Fort McMurray which is now the third-busiest in the province. However, dotted throughout Alberta are smaller regional airports, and they also play an important role in the economy.

Looking at the trend since 1997, some of these regional airports in the province are increasing air traffic. Some, however, are holding steady, while still others are in decline.

Bridge problems stall opening of northeast airport link

CALGARY – With so much public attention focused on the Airport Trail tunnel construction, it’s a project at the other end of the road that has quietly been beset by critical problems and delays.

The $43-million westward extension of Airport Trail (96th Avenue N.E.) from Deerfoot Trail to Harvest Hills Boulevard was supposed to open last September. But the city has flagged quality problems on all four bridges constructed over Canadian Pacific tracks and Nose Creek, and insufficient concrete covering rebar on one bridge is so worrisome that the city and contractor are still determining whether part of that crossing must be demolished and rebuilt to ensure durability and safety.

Airport announces record number of passengers

The Fort McMurray Airport is celebrating a record-breaking year, after 957,000 people traveled through YMM in 2012, with each month breaking all-time highs at the airport, and driving passenger numbers 25% higher than in 2011.

“2012 was very busy and exciting for YMM. The announcement of daily non-stop service to Denver, the first scheduled service to the United States from Fort McMurray, capped off an incredibly successful year,” said Scott Clements, president and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority in a news release.

Airport about to take off?

The Lethbridge County Airport may soon be in line for an upgrade and local travellers may stand to benefit. Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer, on behalf of Denis Lebel, federal minister of transport, infrastructure and communities, and Lethbridge County Reeve Lorne Hickey will be on hand for a Government of Canada funding announcement at the airport this morning.

Details of what the expected funds may be used for are still unknown, but speculation continues to grow about the possibility of WestJet’s new low-cost regional carrier Encore adding Lethbridge as one of its destinations.

Airport traffic taking off

Last year ended on a high note for the Red Deer Airport.

Northwestern Air Lease Ltd., which offers twice-weekly scheduled service to both Kelowna, B.C. and Fort McMurray, enjoyed high passenger loads in December.

In fact, said Red Deer Airport Authority CEO RJ Steenstra, the count might have been the highest on record for the Springbrook-based airport.

Calgary airport improvement fee hike to hurt Canadian airlines

Calgary International Airport is set to raise its airport improvements fees next spring, dealing a blow to Canadian airlines — WestJet Airlines Ltd. in particular, which uses the airport as its base.

Jody Moseley, Calgary airport authority spokeswoman, said the increase would help pay for a $2-billion renovation underway at the airport, including a new runway and terminal.

Edmonton Airport’s state-of-the-art cargo facility a hit with carriers

EDMONTON – To ensure its relevancy as a freight destination, Edmonton International Airport needed an overhaul of its cargo headquarters and the improved facility has already received rave reviews from industry members.

Cargojet announced Thursday it will be the first tenant at Cargo Village, a 50,000-square foot complex on the south end of the runway. The new development comes with a price tag of over $20 million, but should allow air-freight companies like Cargojet to better service its courier customers.

Marriott’s Edmonton airport hotel undergoing major change

EDMONTON – Marriott’s airport hotel, scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, will be branded the Renaissance Edmonton International Airport Hotel, the company announced Friday.

It will be the first Renaissance Hotel to open in Alberta. The property was originally scheduled to open under the Courtyard by Marriott brand, but will now be fully redesigned to reflect Renaissance Hotels, a full-service lifestyle hospitality brand.

Passengers make local airport history

A record-breaking year at the Fort McMurray Airport (YMM) continues to fly even higher, with October making history as the busiest month in the airport’s existence.

Passenger numbers released for the month show nearly 86,000 people traveled through the airport, an increase of 30% — or more than 20,000 passengers — from the same period in 2011.
