Edmonton households to pay 3.3% more in property taxes

The numbers are in and Edmontonians can look forward to a tax hike of just 3.33% in the new year — a full 2% less than last year’s increase.

City council voted 11 to two for a 2013 operating budget of just over $1.9 billion that will see city taxpayers shelling out an extra $60 a year.

The initial proposed tax hike rang in at 5.5% including a 1.5% investment in the Neighbourhood Renewal Program — that number would have meant a $98 annual increase in the average homeowners property taxes.

Pembina Pipeline boosts spending to record level

CALGARY — A 75 per cent increase in capital spending plans for 2013 compared with 2012 will take Pembina Pipeline Corp. into record territory.

The Calgary-based energy transportation firm announced Wednesday afternoon it would spend $965 million next year, three-quarters higher than its 2012 budget and the highest in its history.

Update: Council passes budget with 5.5 per cent tax hike

Twice before, Mayor Naheed Nenshi had chaired budget debates with a keenness to trim but opposed by a council majority often fond of the city hall programs on a would-be chopping block.

But having judged that enough trimming had been done in his first two years, the mayor joined his colleagues in this week’s 2013 budget debates to increase a little, preserve the rest and bring in a 5.5-per-cent property tax hike.

‘Historic’ billion dollar budget for region

On November 13, 2012, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Mayor and Council were presented with the proposed 2013 RMWB Budget and Financial Plan, a budget that has been described as historic due to both dollar size and content. The proposed budget and plan, which includes the 2013 proposed operating and capital budget as well as operating plans for 2014-2018, encompasses several new initiatives in the RMWB, and for the first time includes a one billion dollar price tag.

Budget predicts modest tax hike

AIRDRIE – Airdrie city council got its first glance at the 2013 capital and operating budget Monday night, but will have to wait another month before officially deliberating on it.

City of Airdrie Director of Corporate Services Lucy Wiwcharuk presented administration’s draft of the budget to council Monday night. However, before council gets a chance to vote on it, the budget will have to be vetted through the Finance Advisory Committee. There were several members of the finance committee present at the council meeting to hear the presentation.

Council backs $107.5M capital budget

Red Deer city council hammered out a $107.5-million capital budget that addresses core infrastructure demands while making provisions for community projects in 2013 after nearly nine hours of debate on Tuesday.

Flaherty still expected to balance federal budget by 2015-16, new figures show

OTTAWA— The federal government is expecting a hit to its revenues this year due to changing economic circumstances and softening commodity prices, but still expects to balance the books over the “medium term.”

Indeed, economists still believe the government remains on track to eliminate the deficit — estimated at $21.1 billion in the budget — by 2015-16, and possibly a year earlier.
