Calgary and area average house prices jump 108% over 10 years

CALGARY — Calgary’s residential housing market is poised for expansion in 2013, with move-up buyers set to lead the charge, says a report released Thursday by RE/MAX.

The report said the 10-year appreciation in average house prices for residential properties in the city and area was 108 per cent going from $198,350 in 2002 to $412,315 last year.

CEO hints at Methanex expansion

The new CEO of Methanex announced the possibility of a major expansion of the city’s methanol plant during his visit to Medicine Hat Friday.

“Certainly, Medicine Hat is one of the locations that we’re considering to build a million tonnes of additional capacity,” said CEO John Floren.

“We hope to be at a decision point at this time next year.”

FLC gets $20M toward expansion

A major expansion at the Family Leisure Centre will move ahead with provincial and federal funding, as it was announced on Friday morning that the Province of Alberta and Ottawa will each contribute $10 million towards the $36-million project.

The funds, provided as part of the Build Canada matching grant, is the culmination of years of lobbying other connected to the city’s plan to build more than $100 million on recreational facilities in the coming years, including a proposed event Centre.

Walmart Canada announces major expansion plans

CALGARY — Walmart Canada announced Tuesday major expansion plans that will have the giant retailer invest $450 million for supercentre and distribution centre projects.

The company plans to complete at least 37 supercentre projects, adding 1.4 million square feet of retail space, in its next fiscal year, which runs from February 1, 2013 to January 31, 2014. It said the expansion projects will create more than 7,000 new store, trade and construction jobs. And it will open its first supercentres in the Maritimes.

Methanex announces expansion

Less than two years after restarting production at its Medicine Hat facility, Methanex is investing another $30 million to increase the amount of methanol it can produce.

Pilings and concrete foundations are being put this week to accommodate new distillation equipment at the methanol plant in Brier Park. The towers, which arrived earlier this winter, will eventually allow the facility to ramp up production by about 10 per cent, said locally based company vice-president Kevin Henderson.

Ray Gibbon Drive counts make case for expansion

Traffic counts on Ray Gibbon Drive could push the City of St. Albert to pressure the Alberta government into expanding the roadway sooner than expected, according to St. Albert’s mayor.

City councillors were slotted a report from City staff in late November showing that the number of cars per day on the southern portion of the road has hit more than 14,000 this year, prompting Nolan Crouse to suggest that it might be time for the province to step in and expand the road beyond its current two lanes, even before the third phase to Villeneuve Road is finished.

Push on for courthouse expansion

Local MLAs from both sides of Alberta’s Legislature are being asked to join the push for a bigger courthouse in Red Deer.

Alberta Justice has a time-limited opportunity for a land swap that would create an ideal location for a bigger courthouse while creating new office space for city staff, says Brent Handel, president of the Central Alberta Bar Association.
