Town in good financial shape, independent audit confirms

When it comes to the financial records of the Town of Stony Plain, the Municipality is in good shape, an independent auditor has confirmed.

“Overall, the Town is in good financial health,” Phil Dirks, a chartered accountant with Hawkings Epp Dumont LLP, told Town Council at the regular Council meeting on April 22, 2013. “I believe this is the same message I delivered to Council about the Town’s finances as last year, and that is a good thing: the Town’s financial records are accurate, clear and well-kept.”

Alberta should be back in black by 2014-15, government predicts in budget

EDMONTON – Alberta’s six-year deficit streak should end in 2014-15 with a $555-million surplus, according to calculations based on the government’s three-year financial blueprint.

The 2013-14 budget released Thursday failed to fulfil the Progressive Conservative promise to balance Alberta’s books immediately without tapping into savings. Instead, the government expects a $1.97-billion deficit, in addition to $4.3 billion of borrowing for construction projects that include new schools, road improvements and health care facilities.

Independent budget office agrees Canada’s finances on track over long haul

OTTAWA – The Parliamentary Budget Office agrees with the Conservative government that Canada’s finances are on track over the long term, following controversial changes to provincial health transfers and Old Age Security.

In fact, the independent budget office projects that Ottawa actually has a little more wiggle room to increase spending or cut taxes over the long haul than the Finance Department predicts.

Provincial data shows City finances strong

The City of St. Albert is making the grade in terms of financial performance and operational efficiency, according to a report presented to city councillors this week.

The report from City staff was presented to the Standing Committee on Finance — which is made up of all seven city councillors and chaired by Coun. Cathy Heron — on Monday afternoon, using financial indicator data provided by the Alberta government for 2011 to highlight St. Albert’s performance versus similar comparator communities across the province.

Annual poll finds more Canadians confident about their finances than year ago

TORONTO – It appears Canadians will be entering 2013 in a more positive mood about their finances than they were a year ago, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Harris Decima telephone poll conducted for CIBC found that 70 per cent of those surveyed were feeling positive about their financial situation.

Cabinet ministers will have to make tough choices, Alta finance minister warns

EDMONTON – Alberta’s finance minister warned Wednesday of tough choices in the coming months as the plunging price of the province’s heavy oil takes a big bite out of provincial revenue.

Finance Minister Doug Horner told reporters that he warned his colleagues at a Tuesday cabinet meeting they will be facing financial constraints, including in the areas of health and education.
