Province announces plans to move air ambulance operations to Edmonton International Airport in March

EDMONTON – Alberta Health Services’ new air ambulance operations at the Edmonton International Airport will include a six-patient care area, as well as the ability to quickly transport urgent patients to city hospitals via a STARS helicopter.

The provincial government outlined details Monday of how its Edmonton-based air ambulance operations will work once it relocates to the Edmonton International Airport in March.

Plan for detox in 2013 is unlikely now: MLA

Still considering a variety of sites for a detox centre in Medicine Hat, Alberta Infrastructure says a business case study will be completed in late December – putting an end to the “ready by 2013” expectation, says a local MLA.

“I’ve had about 10 constituents call me about the detox centre,” said Drew Barnes, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat. “It’s frustrating and unfair being the only city in Alberta without a detox facility.”

A month ago, Health Minister Fred Horne confirmed Alberta Health Service was considering Earl Kitchener School as a possible location for a residential detoxification site.

Edmonton’s School of Public Health receives accreditation

EDMONTON – The University of Alberta’s School of Public Health has become the only accredited public health school in Canada and the 50th worldwide, university officials announced Wednesday.

“It clearly sets us apart as a leader in Canada,” the school’s interim dean, Lory Laing, said after the announcement at the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy building on the university campus.

Alberta health authority wants more nurses working full time to buffer looming staff shortage

EDMONTON – Twenty-eight per cent of Alberta Health Services nurses work full time compared with 40.4 per cent provincially and 56 per cent nationally, say provincial health officials.

The imbalance is prompting new efforts by Alberta Health Services to hire more full-time nurses, including new graduates, to ensure Albertans get adequate care.
