Royal LePage finds housing prices up in most Canadian markets in early 2013

TORONTO – Average prices for three common types of housing were up year-over-year in most Canadian markets in the first quarter, national real estate company Royal LePage said Thursday.

Royal LePage said the average price for a standard two-storey detached house was up 2.2 per cent in the January-March period compared with a year ago, while the national average price for detached bungalows rose 2.4 per cent.

City home prices flirt with record highs of 2007

EDMONTON – A tighter supply of listings helped push up resale home prices in March compared to a year ago, says the Realtors Association of Edmonton.

In the Edmonton census metropolitan area, average residential sale prices — including single-detached, condos and row houses — for the month rose more than four per cent to $354,759 from $340,117 in March 2012.

Northeast residents cool to latest plan to convert hotel into low-income housing

Residents in a northeast community aren’t soothed by the Calgary Drop-In Centre’s latest sales pitch to transform a former hotel into low-income housing for the centre’s homeless clients.

Officials with the Drop-In hosted an information session Monday evening at the former Quality Hotel, at Edmonton Trail and McKnight Boulevard N.E., to show off new plans for the housing project.

Lethbridge housing starts on the rise

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation recently released their report on housing starts for February, and Lethbridge starts are on the rise

The city saw an increase in all areas. For February 2013, starts for single-detached homes were at 44, up from 33 the year before. All other housing starts had gone up from 8 to 12, for a total of 56 homes last month and 41 in February 2012.

Housing industry seen as part of Canada’s success

Calgary homebuilder Deep Shergill says the heartbeat of the housing industry has a direct link to the national economy.

The incoming national president of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association even compares it to a line by late General Motors chairman Charlie Wilson, who said: “What’s good for General Motors is good for America and vice versa.”
