Property values rising up in town

Judging from some early numbers, property values in High River are continuing their upward swing.

Overall property values are up nearly four per cent from last year, thanks in large part to a roughly eight per cent surge in the value of non-residential units. according to a Town organized assessment update presented to Council on Monday.

Value of building permits in Calgary region rise in December

CALGARY — The value of building permits in the Calgary region reached $393.5 million in December, up 6.1 per cent from the previous month but down 40.7 per cent from a year ago, according to Statistics Canada.

The federal agency also reported Thursday that Alberta saw permit value decline in December to $1.3 billion, down 12.8 per cent on a monthly basis and by 4.6 per cent year-over-year.

Calgary home sales and prices spike higher in 2012

CALGARY — Rising population numbers drove Calgary housing sales higher and brought average prices within a hair of the record set in 2007, according to the Calgary Real Estate Board.

On Wednesday it announced that 15 per cent more residential real estate sales were completed in the city of Calgary in 2012 than in 2011 and that average prices were up five per cent.

Budget predicts modest tax hike

AIRDRIE – Airdrie city council got its first glance at the 2013 capital and operating budget Monday night, but will have to wait another month before officially deliberating on it.

City of Airdrie Director of Corporate Services Lucy Wiwcharuk presented administration’s draft of the budget to council Monday night. However, before council gets a chance to vote on it, the budget will have to be vetted through the Finance Advisory Committee. There were several members of the finance committee present at the council meeting to hear the presentation.

Calgary and Edmonton displace Toronto and Vancouver as top markets in real estate

CALGARY — Calgary and Edmonton have displaced Toronto and Vancouver as the top-ranked cities for real estate, according to the Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2013 report released Tuesday.

The report, by PwC and the Urban Land Institute, said the Canadian real estate market is expected to remain steady with “modestly good” investment and development prospects across most property sectors for 2013, reflecting expectations of solid supply and demand.

Landlord Raises Garage Rent

Q I have a rent-stabilized apartment with a garage space in New York City. For my upcoming lease, the landlord wants to apply the rent guideline increase of 2 percent or $20, whichever is greater, to the current rent for the garage. A neighbor who rents storage space in the building for $50 a month is also being told that she has to pay the $20 increase on her new lease. Can the landlord do this?

Morinville budget proposes two percent tax increase

Morinville residents will soon be able to provide their input into the 2013 budget, which proposes a two per cent increase in residential and non-residential property taxes.

Town council passed first reading of the 2013 operating and capital budget last Wednesday. The budget is now a public document and open for discussion.
