Cost of building in county to increase

New Sturgeon Valley homes will be more expensive now that county council has raised its off-site levies, but they’ll also have working fire hydrants.

Sturgeon County council voted 5-1 Tuesday in favour of raising its off-site levies for the Sturgeon Valley region. Coun. Don McGeachy opposed the move. Mayor Don Rigney was absent.

The levies, last adjusted in 2007, jump to $55,704 per lot from $22,425.

Big bill for Sturgeon Valley

The Sturgeon Valley needs about $52 million in upgrades for future growth, says a report to county council, and the county might have to more than double its levies in order to get the money.

County council voted 4-0 Tuesday in favour of first reading for the Sturgeon Valley off-site levy bylaw. Mayor Don Rigney was absent. Coun. Don McGeachy abstained from voting due to a potential conflict of interest.

County-approved increase in transportation levies takes effect

The County of Grande Prairie is giving developers a heads-up on increased transportation levies, now in effect.

In June, county councillors approved the increase in offsite levy rates for new and expanded roads.

Zone one, which is the Clairmont Centred Area, will now cost $6,300 per acre, which is an increase from $5,000 per acre. Zone two, which is the City of Grande Prairie Centred Area, will now cost $6,000 per acre, an increase from $5,000 per acre. Zone three, the Grande Prairie Rural Area, will now cost $1,675 per acre, an increase from $1,522 per acre.

Alberta tax watchdog slams Calgary’s call for more tax powers

City officials are pursuing dramatically greater taxation powers that would include civic levies on such things as the GST, alcohol, tobacco and hotels.

In a document procured by taxpayers’ rights advocates, administrators with the City of Calgary suggest seeking a greater share of existing levies from the province — such as those from gasoline — and the right to create new ones that would total 15 changes to tax policy.

Council considering nearly 30 per cent increase in developer fees

The City of Airdrie is considering increasing off-site levies and recreation contributions for new developments by about 27 per cent over current levels.

Should the bylaw be approved, the levies and contributions – charges applied to new developments to fund necessary services such as water sewer and roads – are currently set at $62,000 per acre but would increase to $78,800 per acre.
