Police seize over $400,000 worth of marijuana

A 52-year-old Raymond man is facing drug charges after a search warrant was executed Saturday in the community.

Raymond RCMP received a Crimestoppers tip regarding a marijuana grow operation and conducted an investigation at 208 North and 100 West in Raymond, and found a “sophisticated” three-stage marijuana grow operation which contained 323 plants in the basement, along with five pounds of harvested marijuana bud. According to police, the approximate street value of the seized marijuana is over $400,000.

Calgary police see fewer marijuana grows, call on public to keep eyes peeled

Police busted fewer marijuana grow operations in Calgary neighbourhoods last year, but investigators say they still need the public to step up and help nip ongoing problems in the bud.

A total of 66 warrants were executed on illegal grows in 2012 — just two-thirds the number seen on average over the previous five years. Police also seized 20,000 fewer plants when compared to the same time period.

Police stop grow-op in north Edmonton

An Edmonton landlord got a pungent surprise when she went to check on her north side property Saturday afternoon.

Police say the woman went to check on the home, at 90 Street and 129B Avenue, and discovered a small marijuana grow op inside.

Acting Staff Sgt. Colleen Maynes said there were less than 20 plants inside the home, along with several pieces of equipment.

Lethbridge man charged after police dismantle two grow operations

A Lethbridge man was charged after police dismantled grow operations from two south-side homes and seized marijuana plants worth about $36,500.

Officers with ALERT’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, made up of members of the Lethbridge Regional Police Service and the RCMP, laid the charges following a two-month investigation.

Calgary cops bust more than five times the marijuana grow ops than Edmonton police

Police in Calgary are smoking out dramatically more marijuana grow operations than those in Edmonton.

In 2011, officers uncovered 94 of the criminal gardens in Calgary compared to just 16 in the provincial capital, whose population is about 320,000 smaller.

The previous year, 27 of the grow-ops were busted in Edmonton while 122 were seized in the Stampede City.

It’s a pattern that dates back to at least 2007.

Alberta wants ideas on shutting down grow-ops

CALGARY — Alberta’s justice minister says illegal marijuana grow-ops in the province have reached a “chronic” level and ideas are needed on how to deal with them.

Jonathan Denis announced plans Friday to get input from the public and relevant groups on ways to address health and safety concerns and to tackle criminal activity that stems from the illegal operations.

“What I’m interested in is what we can do as a province to address issues such as the grow-op you see behind me and to try and improve people’s lives — and also to try and shut down the proceeds of organized crime,” said Denis, who used a former grow-op home with a red security fence in northeast Calgary as a backdrop.

More than 100 plants seized after Edmonton marijuana grow-op busted

Police found more than 100 marijuana plants after busting a marijuana grow operation Thursday morning at a south Edmonton home.

Members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) green team executed a warrant at the home near 72nd Avenue and 109th Street around 10 a.m., said spokeswoman Candace Cook.
