The U.S. Simply Doesn’t Have Enough Available Rental Housing, Whether You’re Rich or Poor

The Census Bureau says there are about 41 million renter households in the United States, a group making up about 35 percent of the country. And the renter ranks are expected to swell this decade as the housing demand of Baby Boomers and their children starts to converge. Twentysomethings who’ve been living at home during the recession will finally move out to form their own households. Many Baby Boomers, meanwhile, are expected to downsize into smaller rentals units where they won’t have to mow their own lawns.

Calgary-based investment firm has sold all its Lethbridge properties

Calgary-based Mosaic Capital Corporation recently announce that its wholly-owned subsidiary First West Properties L.P. has sold two Lethbridge warehouses. These properties were the last remaining of three properties First West previously held in Lethbridge.

The Decade (1820 31 Street North) and Braman (2930 9 Avenue North) warehouses had a combined square footage over 187,000 square feet and were sold for nearly $15 million. Company representatives would not reveal who the buyer of the properties was.

Municipality ready to seize downtown properties

After attempts to negotiate voluntary sale agreements with landowners in a chunk of the downtown area were unsuccessful, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s city council gave unanimous approval Tuesday evening to begin the process of expropriating each of the properties.

The municipality has identified a handful of downtown properties that they will require in order to accommodate the construction of a new sports and entertainment complex, as well as some new road extensions to improve traffic.
