Region gets $200K for railway crossing upgrades

Southeastern Alberta is getting nearly $200,000 from the federal government to improve safety at 14 railway crossings.

“While Canada has one of the safest rail systems in the world, the Harper Government is working to further reduce rail accidents across the country,” said Medicine Hat MP LaVar Payne in a release. “These improvements will make our intersections safer in our riding.”

Wildlife centre upgrades, expansion underway

The Medicine River Wildlife Centre is about to break ground and start construction on a one-of-a-kind education centre, green showplace and a state-of-the-art wildlife hospital.

The upgrade will rely on a wide range of help and donations of expertise, materials, labour and cash.

The goal is to complete the upgraded facility by the centre’s 30th anniversary in 2014.

Foothills cuts millions from cost of road upgrade

Officials with the MD of Foothills were able to shave millions off the cost of fixing a busy road in the Millarville area.

On March 13 Foothills council approved a $1.37 million plan to repair and resurface the Racetrack Road between Black Diamond and the Millarville Racetrack over the next three years.

After an earlier plan to completely rebuild and pave the 11 km road at a cost $6.7 million was revealed in 2011, MD officials went back to the drawing board to find a less expensive option.

$4.4-million sewer project bumped up to this year

A $4.4-million sewer system upgrade for the city’s growing southeast sector will take place two years earlier than originally planned.

Recent planning work for the sewer upgrade project determined the optimal and most cost-effective alignment would be along sections of 28th Street North and 26th Avenue North, which are scheduled to be twinned in 2014.

Upgrades for Moyer Rec Centre

The Moyer Recreation Centre in Josephburg is going to get some upgrades thanks to funding from the federal government.

Announced on Friday, Feb. 22 by Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit — whose constituency includes the rural part of Strathcona County — the Moyer Rec Centre will receive $132,150 to upgrade the facility’s kitchen, gymnasium, banquet hall and arena.

Canada Olympic Park unveils $4M expansion

One of Calgary’s favourite places to ski is getting bigger, offering more runs and more challenge for ski hounds to enjoy.

Winsport will be unveiling their new $4M project that adds eight additional acres to the facility.

There will be bigger runs and more of them geared not just for recreational skiers and snowboarders, but for competitive skiers as well.

Hwy 791 upgrading dropped from province’s plan

A project to upgrade a highway in Red Deer County that was counted on to ease congestion on a local service road has been dropped from the province’s three-year plan.

The $16.4-million project was first announced in 2010 and involved extending Hwy 791, which currently ends at Hwy 590, eight km east of Innisfail, where the road continues north as an unpaved route.

Airport about to take off?

The Lethbridge County Airport may soon be in line for an upgrade and local travellers may stand to benefit. Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer, on behalf of Denis Lebel, federal minister of transport, infrastructure and communities, and Lethbridge County Reeve Lorne Hickey will be on hand for a Government of Canada funding announcement at the airport this morning.

Details of what the expected funds may be used for are still unknown, but speculation continues to grow about the possibility of WestJet’s new low-cost regional carrier Encore adding Lethbridge as one of its destinations.
