Sobeys first store in Quarry

Sobeys is the first to put shovel into ground in The Quarry that will radically change the downtown core of Cochrane.

The foundation is now being laid for the Sobeys grocery store being developed on the corner of Railway St. and Charlesworth Ave.by Barry Metcalfe to replace his existing Cochrane IGA store. The new store will be more than double the size of the existing Cochrane IGA.

Washout Creek trails to be upgraded, repaired this summer

More than $360,000 in upgrades to the Washout Creek trail loop was proposed at the Monday, Oct. 22 Devon town council meeting.

The trail loop, which begins at the Lions Campground and follows Washout Creek for several kilometers, suffers from a lack of heavy-duty maintenance. Bridges over the creek along the route are degraded, and are now only capable of supporting foot traffic.

There is a common misperception that all real estate classes are created equal. House prices are falling in some cities in Canada, primarily because the rules to get mortgages have changed, such as increased debt-coverage ratios, higher down payments and shorter amortization. This allowed our Finance Minister Hon. Jim Flaherty to tighten consumer debt without raising interest rates! This leads some to believe that those (modestly) falling house prices will also affect other real estate classes, such as apartment buildings. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Outdated Kananaskis Country water plant set for upgrades

In a sign of the growing human pressures on Kananaskis Country, the province on Friday announced a contract to expand a water plant in the mountain playground west of Calgary.

Utilities player EPCOR has been awarded the contract in a public-private partnership (P3) to upgrade the $59.6 million water and wastewater treatment at Evan-Thomas, off of Hwy. 40 just north of the Mt. Kidd Golf Course.

REITs beat condos every time

Looking for an investment with skyscraper-high returns? Forget condominiums in Toronto or Calgary and think about real estate investment trusts that own apartments.

That’s the conclusion of Michael Smith, a real estate analyst at Macquarie Equities Research, in the fourth annual installment of his study comparing a REIT investment in the apartment sector to a condo investment. The REITs are still way ahead.
